out of the hotel room without a backward glance.
D.J. stopped short in the parking lot and stuffed her gun into the waistband at the back of her jeans before pulling her softball league jacket down over the bulge. She had no idea where he'd gone. Their car remained in the same place. Since she possessed the single set of keys, its presence there created no surprise.
"Where is he?" she asked.
No answer.
"Dammit, Josie, you can't tell me he needs help and then let me stand here wondering where he's gone while he's hurt or killed or both. Where is he?" The last words rose to a shout, echoing back to her from the asphalt and bouncing off the silent parked cars.
"Relax, dear. The way you're acting, you'd think you cared about him."
D.J. looked up but saw no sign of the angel. Lucky for Josie. D.J. heard the smile in her angel's voice, and if she had to see the expression right now, she just might detonate. "Just tell me where he is and then get lost."
"I'll be happy to, dear. He's at the top of the highway. Turn around. Over there, on the hill."
Turning, D.J. squinted into the fading darkness. She could just make out milling figures at the top of the indicated hill. Too many figures from her point of view. McCall was outnumbered and unarmed. D.J. began to run.
Though she was in good shape, fear made her breath come in harsh, fast gasps. She reached the base of the hill and glanced upward. Four figures,
